It is assumed that you already installed Optitask. For more information on the installation please
read the Installation Guide.
Optitask consists of two major components, a Service Engine that is responsible for scheduling
and executing tasks and a Management Console (MC) to configure and monitor tasks.
About the Service Engine
The Service Engine runs in the background of your system and does not have a user interface.
The only important thing to know about the Service Engine is that it must run before the MC can
be used or before configured tasks can execute. There are two versions of the Service Engine: a
Desktop Engine deployed with Optitask Standard Edition and Windows Service Engine deployed
with the Professional and Enterprise editions.
· To ensure the Desktop Engine is running look for a program called OT.DesktopHost.exe in
the Process tab of your Task Manager. During installation your system will automatically be
configured to start the desktop engine when your computer starts.
· To ensure the Windows Service Engine is running make sure the Optitask Service is started
under the local system Services. During installation your system will automatically be
configured to start the service engine when your computer starts.
Using the Management Console
The MC is a graphical interface where you configure, schedule and monitor tasks. You can start
the MC from the Start->Programs->Optitask menu where Optitask was installed and to click on
the “Optitask Management Console” icon. If you are using Optitask Standard edition the MC will
open up immediately, for the Professional or Enterprise Editions you must specify the location of
the Optitask Service to connect to.
Refer to Using Remote Services for more information on configuring and using remote services.
To connect to the local server select the “Local Server” option and click on Connect.
When the MC opens you will see the main window split into three sections:
1. The
first view is called the explorer view where you can navigate through the folders and
tasks in a tree like structure.
2. The
second view is a list of child-items under the selected item from the explorer view.
3. The
third view consists of two tabs, the first displays the tasks that are in-process, queued or
running and the second tab displays the event log of executed tasks.
